Street Lamp Posts Have Entered a New, Green Era

When a satellite in outer space sends photographs of the world back
to us on Planet Earth, most of the lighting seen in the night shots are electric street lamp
posts shining in the dark. It stands to reason that if these lights could be powered by energy that
is renewable, clean and earth-friendly, it would be hugely beneficial to our environment and to all humanity.
Fortunately solar powered street lights have come to the rescue. They are fast becoming a useful and
economical means for householders, the managers of public spaces, roadways and commercial properties to
replace “dirty” power street lamps with cheap and naturally sun-powered lights.
The instability of energy prices today, along with fears of oil running out in the next fifty years or so and
global warming concerns, is turning the attention of mainstream decision-makers in all walks of life to the matter
of alternative energy. Given the ubiquity of street lamp posts (even the smallest towns has hundreds and thousands
of them) and the fact that a street lamp post stands outside where a linked solar panel can be powered by the sun,
it makes total sense for lamp posts to go solar. Millions of kilometers of electrical street wiring can be saved by
this means. Whole portions of cities can become detached from the electrical grid if solar street lights replace
electrical ones.

Solar street lamp posts work along the same lines as any other solar appliances. Each
street light that runs on sun power is a standalone power factory, with small panels containing photovoltaic cells
mounted on the post where it collect the power of sun’s light rays (not heat rays), converts it into a form of
electricity suitable for powering street lights, storing in batteries and then using it to power the specifically
designed light bulbs in the lamps. These lamp posts are cheap and easy to install and are far more economical than
standard electric lampposts. There is no wiring or specialized knowledge required for their installation, they can
be placed just about anywhere, and they can run maintenance-free for decades.
Built-in sensors switch the solar street lamp posts on an off. During the daylight hours the unit accumulates
solar power and stores it and at night the solar street lights switch on automatically, remaining on for eight to
ten hours, as required. Solar lamp posts operate using LED bulbs which are more energy-effective. They are
long-life bulbs that are specifically designed to run of converted solar powered that have been stored in
batteries. More on outdoor solar lights
Solar street lamp posts come in a variety of shapes and styles, from short lamp posts of 3.5’ to tall ones of
7’. They can have single lights on top of them or clusters of two or three. In addition there are styles that fit
onto low garden walls or onto the side walls of buildings. Driveways, walkways, gardens, patios, parking lots and
street ways can all benefit from low-cost, solar-powered lighting. The money saving aspect of solar lighting is
what is persuading homeowners and managers of commercial property and public spaces to invest in solar lamp posts. Although the posts themselves cost about the same as regular posts, they do not
require wiring and are free to operate. They are built to last. If you want to save time, energy and money while
enjoying the convenience of not switching on and off lights, then solar street lamp posts are the answer. More on
